Customization:

This tutorial I used: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_J2-UBK9_PA, only covered how to create highly detailed and realistic chess pieces. I wanted to create a more retro video gamy aesthetic for the chess pieces to honour the golden age of the first 3D low poly games. I created the realistic chess piece from the tutorial, removed some edge loops, by selected and deleting some edges. Until I have a simple wireframe of the old piece. Then I used bridge edge loops or the fill face tool to fill in the wireframe. Creating a unique low poly chess piece.

This tutorial taught me how to create a chess board with a grid and how grids work in general. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYSF2BrM8qw I improved the board design by giving it a glossy marble finish. I also surrounded the board with a wood cover of sorts because I thought the square board looked too unpolished and boring.

Floating 40 Marks:

I want you to focus on the graphical style of my chess board. As in not the detail or realism, but the theme of the board. I want you to see my evolution as a blender artist, how I utilized skills learned from past lessons in this project. Such as how I utilized reference images, modelling, subdividing, texturing, etc in this project. I want you to look at the simplicity of chess pieces, the minimalistic detail like the first 3D game you ever played. I also want you to focus on the subtle details, such as the wood surrounding the board, how it adds to the aesthetic, the lighting which you need to render to appreciate and the camera angles on my renders. P.S. The scene looks much better when rendered.
