Video Games The Movie
1. What are some of the reasons video games were successful? What makes a game popular?
Video games like forms of media suspend our disbelief by allowing us to not just watch but do things that are not possible in real life. They are a form of entertainment which humans have always desired since the dawn of time. They allow us to tell stories in an interactive style that can branch in many directions unlike linear movie and books. Games become popular when they are most importantly fun, are widely accessible (cheap), and look good. Stories, DLC, and 4K graphics can help but are not necessary to a popular game.
2. What are some of the reasons why the video game industry crashed in the 1980s?
The video game companies at the time thought they were invincible including the top dog at the time Atari, and pumped out game after game hoping to make profits. New passionless developers sprung up daily hoping to take a piece of the gaming monopoly which was being flooded with soulless games that were nothing more than cash grabs. Finally a game so bad that millions were buried in landfills came out known as ET, which was rushed to come out with the movie.
3. Do you think video games are a form of art? Why or why not?
Yes, like movies music, and literature. Video games can be beautiful visually, in sound design, story, or all three. Video games are much more than a simple toy used to distract kids and cure boredom, they can be used to express views, teach morals, educate in many subjects, distress, train hand-eye coordination and reaction time. All in a enjoyable and sometimes meaningful package. Art in it's basis is a expression of human ideas, views and talent, and that is exactly what a video game is. A representation of humanity
4. What is the next evolution in video games? What are the challenges that need to be solved in the next generation of games?
The next evolution in video games is likely VR and AR. But that is not set in stone as VR has failed in the past and is currently very expensive and AR (Augment Reality) is in it's infancy with no dedicated console or device supporting it thus far. The biggest challenges for these new technology are price, mass market appeal, and health.
