Game Designer Skills
Skills I Feel Best At
1. Games
Since I was born, I've always had a fascination and passion for video games. From simple arcade games like Breakout to the modern interactive visual novels like The Walking Dead. I feel I would be great in this skill since I have lots of experience and passion in this field, and I think experience is essential for game developers. After all if you haven't played a game, how would you know how to design a good one? Also if you don't enjoy or have passion for video games then why would you want to make them? I think passion for video games is the backbone of the gaming industry, in other careers like law or medicine, there are hundreds perhaps thousands of people who hate their job and are only in it for the money. While Game Developers on the other hand tend to enjoy and be proud of what they do, and that is why I'm interested in this industry.2. History:
History has always been a subject I enjoyed, it was one of the only classes I looked forward to before electives. What I enjoy about history is all the tactical geniuses, the comically dumb characters, conflict of new ideas with the old, the struggles, the triumphs, what life was like in another time, all of it contributing to our state in the modern age. It all just fascinates me, and I think it fits well with video games not just story wise but in inspiration. Now I don't think all games need to have history in them or even a story in that matter. But I think many can be based off history in terms of characters, theme, and story while doing it own thing such as Assassin's Creed for example. I think I would be great in this field because I love both history and video games, and I also have a extensive knowledge of battles, tactics, weapons, and military within history which I think can all be used as assets and ideas in a video game. Sometimes the best ideas come the past, in history.
3. Sound Design (Foley):
Ever since I did the Foley project in Media Arts, I was hooked on sound design. It was just something so simple yet so brilliant, I loved that you can make two spoons clashing sound like a slashing katanas and so on. One of my favourite things about video games is the atmosphere, simple things like the wind to the walking sounds, to birds chirping in the morning. All of it adds so much to the experience and just makes the world so much more alive and believable. That is why I want to do Foley, because I feel it adds a lot to the game while being a fun job to do that requires a lot of creativity. I think I would be great in this role because I enjoy recording and creating sound, and I have serious OCD that makes me want to match sound and action in perfect timing. I also like using my creativity and thinking outside the box, and my attention to detail will help in editing the sound to fit smoothly in.
Skills That I Struggle With
1. Public Speaking:
Public speaking has always been a skill I struggled with, my friends and teachers may call me a talker, but in reality I'm usually a very quiet person. Speaker in front of a crowd especially if they are strangers is completely different speaking with a friend or family. My biggest problem with public speaking is pacing, clarity, and eye contact. I usually end up talking to fast sometimes even missing entire sentences, I don't manage to keep eye contact for very long during a speech and clarity isn't very consistent. I hope to improve this skill in the future as I feel I have a lot of ideas to share but is unable to do so since my public speaking skills aren't great.
Thanks for your detailed responses, David. Just a reminder to catch up on the pixel art assignments you missed while you were away. Also, it looks like you made a custom header for you blog, but never made a post about it.
